Imbalance volumes

imbalance-volumes

The system imbalance of the Netherlands over each 15-minute imbalance settlement period, signed so that positive is a surplus and negative a shortage.

We derive this series. Each value is the sum of balancing-state's minutes over the settlement period, divided by 60, in MWh. A period missing any minute is a gap, never a partial sum.

We keep every revision of this series we observe, and declare its gaps rather than fill them. ?as_of= reads show what was known at an instant, from the point-in-time start below. A backtest that reads with them sees only what had been published by then.

Coverage per zone

Zone EIC Time zone History from Point-in-time from Current resolution Notes
NL Netherlands 10YNL----------L Europe/Amsterdam 2019-12-30 2026-09-29 08:44Z PT15M

History starts at the date shown, in each zone's local time, and coverage is ongoing. The live status says how far each zone has reached.

Point-in-time reads work from the UTC minute shown. It is the revisions_observed_from boundary every series response carries, rounded up to the minute. The API rejects an as_of before the boundary with a 400. Earlier points carry the final settled value.

Fields

Field Unit Description
system_imbalance MWh The system imbalance over the 15-minute imbalance settlement period (ISP), signed as balancing-state's system_imbalance: positive is a surplus, negative a shortage. Derived by Tolven: the sum of balancing-state's minutes over the ISP ÷ 60, rounded to 1 kWh. An ISP missing any minute is a gap, not a partial sum.

What it is not

  • Not a volume published upstream. We compute it from balancing-state, so it carries our derivation and not an ENTSO-E figure.
  • Not imbalance prices. These are quantities in MWh. The prices are in imbalance-prices.

Freshness

A period appears after the derive job has run over its complete minutes of balancing-state, and that job runs on its own schedule. Measured 2026-10-30, in nine samples of the live status over 14 minutes, the newest period had started between 27 and 56 minutes earlier. Across those samples the newest period advanced by one step of 30 minutes, which is the only step we observed. That is an observation, not a schedule, and we offer no freshness SLA.

Access

The last 31 days of every served zone are open without a key. History before that and the bulk Parquet files need a key. How to request one.
