Balancing state

balancing-state

ENTSO-E's Current Balancing State (EB GL Art. 12.3(a)) per control area. Positive is a surplus and negative a shortage, the sign of ACER's imbalance settlement methodology.

We keep every revision of this series we observe, and declare its gaps rather than fill them. ?as_of= reads show what was known at an instant, from the point-in-time start below. A backtest that reads with them sees only what had been published by then.

History starts at the date shown, in each zone's local time, and coverage is ongoing. The live status says how far each zone has reached.

Point-in-time reads work from the UTC minute shown. It is the revisions_observed_from boundary every series response carries, rounded up to the minute. The API rejects an as_of before the boundary with a 400. Earlier points carry the final settled value.

balancing-state · DE-50HZ, DE-AMPRION, DE-TENNET, DE-TRANSNET
In DE-50HZ, DE-AMPRION, DE-TENNET and DE-TRANSNET this is the control area's own balance. The German TSOs also publish the NRV-Saldo, their grid control cooperation's balance, signed the other way: positive there is a shortage. This field keeps ISHM's sign: positive is a surplus.

Warning · balancing-state · FR
In FR each minute carries the value of its imbalance settlement period: 30 minutes until 2024-12-31T23:00Z, 15 from then.

Fields

Field Unit Description
system_imbalance MW The system imbalance of the control area over the minute. Positive is a surplus: the system was long, with more energy fed in or less taken off than scheduled across the area. Negative is a shortage: the system was short. 0 is a minute published as balanced, or with a zero quantity. ENTSO-E publishes it as the Current Balancing State (EB GL Art. 12.3(a)); the sign is that of ACER's imbalance settlement methodology.

What it is not

  • Not imbalance prices. The value is a quantity in MW. The prices are in imbalance-prices, for NL, BE and FR only.
  • Not energy per settlement period. For MWh per 15-minute period, see imbalance-volumes, for NL only.

Freshness

This series is minutes old, not hours. Measured 2026-10-30, in nine samples of the live status over 14 minutes, the newest minute was between 10 and 37 minutes old, depending on the zone. Each zone advanced in steps of 15 minutes, and some German zones trail the others by one step. That is an observation of upstream, not a schedule we can hold it to. We offer no freshness SLA.

Revisions

How often a value moves after it first appears depends on the zone. We measured it up to 2026-10-30, over the minutes we watched arrive live. NL, BE, DE-50HZ and DE-TRANSNET had no revisions. DE-AMPRION revised 1.2% and DE-TENNET 3.0%, the latest 26 hours after first publication. FR revised 29%, typically about two days later and up to three weeks later. If you read FR live, expect its values to move. We keep every revision, so as_of shows what was known at any instant from the point-in-time start.

Access

The last 31 days of every served zone are open without a key. History before that and the bulk Parquet files need a key. How to request one.
